What Causes Men’s Hair Loss?

The most prevalent cause of men’s hair loss is a condition called male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia. Though other causes like disease, medicine, and trauma can cause thinning and hair loss, most men can blame genetics for their receding hairlines.
Androgenetic Alopecia
In Androgenic Alopecia, the male hormone testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair follicles to go through a process of miniaturization. Over time, the individual hair shafts become shorter and finer, and they lose their pigmentation. The hair follicles eventually die off, resulting in areas of baldness. Since the follicles at the crown and hairline are particularly sensitive to the hormone DHT, these areas are typically the first to be affected by male pattern baldness. This is the condition that often results in the familiar “horseshoe” pattern of remaining hair.
Other Causes
Though male pattern baldness causes most hair loss, men can lose their hair to other factors. Stress, thyroid conditions, medical conditions, and some medications can cause balding.
